McLaurin, Shamla PhD, LPC
Shamla McLaurin, PhD has been in the field of mental health and substance abuse for over 25 years. She received her doctorate degree from Virginia Tech in Human Development (Psychology) with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy. Dr. McLaurin is licensed as a professional counselor of mental health and clinical professional counselor in PA, DE, and MD. She has worked with clients across the lifespan presenting with a variety of relational, behavioral, and emotional challenges. Her approach to counseling is grounded in her background with systemic theory and analyzing the dynamics that impact our decisions, both past and present. In her approach to talk therapy, she utilizes aspects of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, family systems therapy, emotion-focused therapy and solution-focused therapy with an emphasis on strengths and client-focused treatment to address such challenges as anxiety, depression, life transitions, substance abuse recovery, and a variety of relational and behavioral concerns.
Dr. McLaurin strives to create an atmosphere in which every client feels seen and heard; feels they are respected and not judged; and believes there is hope for the outcome they desire in whatever the situation they are currently facing. Her style is very open and direct, as she believes that facilitates the most meaningful dialogue.
